Summer Update! Spring Tour Recap, Thre3style, & More

Damn.

I’m officially the worst person ever when it comes to updating my website. Its been months since my last blog update… Needless to say a lot has happened since I last updated my site. Let’s see: I did a run of Midwest shows headlining the Red Bull JFR tour, crisscrossed the country judging every Red Bull Thre3style regional competition, played the Thre3style SXSW showcase in front of 9,000 people, released a mix or two, rocked the inaugural Spring Awakening Festival, played a Vegas showcase, did a bunch of interviews and press, celebrated my 2 year anniversary, and crowned a new Thre3style Champion. Whew. Lets start from the beginning, shall we?

In March I flew to San Francisco and judged the first of the 11 Red Bull Thre3style regionals across the country, in which Seattle’s finest Four Color Zack won in grand fashion. The next week I was off to Vegas to play the Red Bull showcase at LAX, then we got in a car and drove to Austin, TX for the Thre3style SXSW Showcase. Then this happened:

April was one of the busiest months of my career, as it brought the next round of Thre3style regionals as well as the start of the inaugural Red Bull JFR tour, which was headlined by Trentino and myself. We went to college towns across the midwest and played our patented “space ship” setup which includes 4 turntables, 3 mixers and a full drum set. Indiana University, University of Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Northern Illinois University were all rocked proper, and we will hopefully be coming to a college near YOU in the fall.

May continued my two-month Red Bull road trip, performing and judging Thre3style battles in Boston, LA, Columbus, Austin, and DC. I also recorded my opening set at the Austin regional, GRAB THAT HERE. Washington DC was the last regional of the year, which brings us to June and the 2012 Red Bull Thre3style U.S. Finals in Orlando. First, gotta give props to all the winners of the qualifiers this year:

Kansas City – DJ Sku
San Francisco – Four Color Zack
Boston – LayZeeBoy
Chicago – Mike 2600
Los Angeles – Dynamix
Columbus – Ginsu
Charlotte – DJ KU
Austin – Abe The Assassin
DC – Spinser Tracy

As June hit, I had a week or so off before I flew to St. Louis for a gig with Kid Cut Up, then I got right back on a plane to play the inaugural Spring Awakening festival at Soldier Field in Chicago. Was a great experience minus a few technical difficulties (Pioneer mixers, I hate you). The good people at Lost in Concert did a great SAMF preview piece on me, READ THAT HERE if you’d like.  The next week it was down to rainy Orlando Florida for the 2012 Red Bull Thre3style U.S. Finals. The event was spread out over three days; two prelims and one final. After the first two prelims (and a couple judges decisions that I thought were terrible) the six DJs to advance to the finals were: Ku, Sku, Four Color Zack, Spinser Tracy, Dynamix, and Rincon (the Orlando wildcard). I opened and judged the finals, and after all was said and done, Four Color Zack took home the title (with Sku and Dynamix taking home 2nd and 3rd respectively). I was completely blown away when I saw Zack for the first time in SF, and I could not be happier to pass the crown to such a supremely talented DJ and even better person.

Damn, I guess thats about all for now. Got some cool stuff coming up in July, and as always please check my CALENDAR for all gig updates, I do actually keep that up to date.

Thanks for your continued support,

-Ian
